The Mighty River
6/27
We spent the entire day navigating the Frost River! Started out the day misting as we crossed Frost Lake. As we crossed the long portage off of Frost, we didn't expect the day would be filled with beaver dams and unidentifiable portages. This was one of my favorite days even though it was filled with clouds, on and off of the raincoat, and in and out of the canoe.
Throughout the day we crossed the numerous, double digits at least, beaver dams, we twisted back and forth, up and down the widening and narrowing of the Frost River. With two 30 pounds pups, 3 large packs and 2 adults, it takes only about 3 inches of water to get over these dams. However, for several of the beaver dams, we had to improvise on how to get over. Jess would need to jump out and stand on the dam while pulling the canoe up and over the dam. Then she would need to hop back in as I jumped out to lift the middle and rear up and over, jumping in as soon as the back passed over the dam.
We made it to a clear campsite on the North side of Afton Lake. The night cleared up beautifully and we were able to see the constellations around midnight. The site was high up on a bluff, looking out over the water.
