Home Grown Pork

Why Hereford?

We love having Hereford pigs on our farm because they are gentle animals making them easy to handle and fun to be around which is particularly important as we love involving our children in our activities around the farm. A big reason we chose to start a farm in the first place was to provide a place where our children could grow with the ability to explore the outdoors, do more things with their hands, and enjoy the simple things despite living in this world filled with screens.

What we also love about Herefords is that they are a heritage breed and we love the idea of having livestock that pays tribute to the old ways of farming. Heritage breeds are livestock that were commonly seen “back in the day”. These animals were raised before the agriculture industry became saturated with large factory practices involving producing livestock for the sole purpose of quantity rather than quality. Being a heritage breed means the breed has important qualities that were important before the industry changed, such as being hardy to our climate, motherly to their young, ability to reproduce naturally, thrive on forage and naturally resistant to diseases and parasites. A drawback of heritage breeds is they take a longer to grow, but with that time they deliver higher quality meat. Herefords are known for their beautiful marbling and rich red meat that’s packed with great flavor you just can’t get at the grocery store.

This heritage breed with their gentle demeanor and high-quality meat are what make Herefords the best choice for us to have on our farm. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Our Practices

Our Herefords are raised outdoors and have free access to their pasture and shelter so they can decide what they want for the day. Their pasture is plenty large so they have ample places to root around or play in the mud. Every day, Kyle heads to what we call the “pig barn” to fill their trough with local organic feed. While they are fed, they get plenty of back pats and ear rubs. In the summer you can often find Kyle hosing a spot for them to have a mud pit or them standing in the spray. They just love getting hosed off on a hot day!
