BWCA Trip - August 2014 Part 2
Day 3 (8/18/14 930am)
When we had returned to our campsite last night several young guys had off loaded at the base of the campsite. It was getting late and they were not able to find a campsite so they asked us if they could hang at the base of the campsite for the night.
It was quite windy last night. This morning, though, it was calm and foggy. The view is great, high up looking out over Clearwater Lake taking in the mist laying over the water. The fog is rolling over the tall cliffs, showing great depth to the lake and surrounding forest.
This morning we plan on putting on the miles! Our path will bring us North through a 90 rod portage into Mountain Lake. Once there, we will head NW to a 100 rod portage to Watap Lake. We follow this lake to Rove lake. According to Dave this lake is separated from Watap by only a beaver dam! At the end of Rove we enter a 200 rod portage heading SW into Daniels Lake.
Hoping the sun comes out, but rain is more likely. I took the morning to build a fire and carved out initials into a piece of drift wood.
Day 3 (8/18/14 850pm)
We are in bed! It's been a long, wet day. The fog brought a constant mist covering everything. As we brush against all the foliage we become soaked. Every portage took more out of us. The weather was so blah that we didn't see or hear much wildlife. The last portage to our current spot on Daniels Lake was horrible! Since it had rained and misted all day, we were soaked to the bone making our shoes start getting to our feet. I have two band-aids and need another! But as we made it through the day, we did get to do and see some cool things.
As we came to Watab portage, there was a big monument, showing the Canadian/US Border. Then as we passed from Watab to Rove, we had to pass through a beaver dam! It was super shallow, our canoe was just enough out of the water to get us through! When we finally got to the portage to Daniels, we met a nice couple just getting setting out across Rove. They said that Daniels was easy but the portage was not. I couldn't agree more with them!
We did see some very pretty plants with berries and a moose footprint. It was HUGE! The rest of the night was pretty lame, hence a 9pm bed time. It rained pretty good for about 30 minutes, leaving us to deal with some damp wood to use for dinner, we were still able to feast on our bacon wrapped steaks though ;)
