Staying Dry
6/26
The next couple days in the BWCA were wet ones! Woke up early on Sunday to overcast skies and a large area to cover. We were headed to Frost Lake, which was quite a distance South. Most of our stuff was still a little damp as we set out for the day, layered up to our rain coats.
While the day was long and hard, it was peaceful. It refrained from raining on us all day and the sun even made an appearance. It was more paddling than portaging. The dogs didn't enjoy that as much, but Jess and I really take that time to soak in the environment. There's no bugs, and this route was relatively shut off from the wind.
At the South end of Cross Bay Lake we spotted a beautiful moose cow. I love seeing moose on the trail. Something about their massive size moving around in such a harshly packed environment with ease just fascinates me. She had waded in to her belly, dropping her head into the water to snag vegetation. We spotted her all the way across the water from the North end, it was a clear shot. The dogs were super quite all the way to her. The lake turned East and as we made our turn, Cedar noticed the cow and started baying loudly until she was out of sight. Note the moose didn't even flinch. As if the ear piercing shriek of a cattle dog is something she hears regularly! There's no hushing that Cedar girl. It's in her DNA, to alert, she knows she's "naughty" and even looks remorseful for her natural projections to the point where I can barely bring myself to tell her no!
As we made it through the last lake, the sun was going down, the wood ducks were hunkering down for the night. The chicks all lined up on the log with momma duck. It looked like it was going to be a fine night. Until the rain came! We spent the majority of the night in our tent playing hang man!!!
